Parts of Speech

When we speak or write we use different kinds of words – Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions and Interjections. These are called Parts of Speech. Let us learn more about them:

Noun

A  Noun is a naming word.

A Noun is the name of a person, place, animal or thing (everything that we can see, hear, touch, taste, smell, sense).

All names are Nouns.

Examples:

  1.      Bill is a farmer.
  2.     The cow gives us milk.
  3.     Bombay is a big city.
  4.      The stars twinkle at night.

Pronoun

A Pronoun is a word that is used in place of a Noun (I, we, You, he, she, it, they are pronouns).

  1. Mary is absent as she is not well.
  2. John is very rich. He is a businessman.
  3. Here are your books; Please put them on the table.
  4. You are wet. Go and change your clothes.  

 

Verb

A Verb is a saying word.

A Verb says something about a person or thing (anything).

A Verb tells us about the action of a person or thing.

Remember, a verb is the most important word in a sentence. We

cannot make a sentence without a verb.

  1. I drink milk everyday.
  2. Birds fly in the sky.
  3. He works in a bank.
  4. A barber cuts hair.

 

Adjective

An Adjective is a describing word.

An Adjective is a word that is used to add something to the meaning of a Noun/Pronoun.

  1. The rose is a beautiful flower.
  2. Jane is a kind girl.
  3. They have a red car.
  4. Harry has five caps.

 

Adverb

A word which adds something to the meaning of a verb is called an Adverb.

An Adverb is a word which modifies a Verb, an Adjective or another Adverb.

It tells us How a thing is done, Where it is done or When it is done.

  1.   The soldiers fought bravely.
  2.      The students have gone upstairs.
  3.      I wrote a letter yesterday.
  4.     The old man walked slowly.

 

Preposition

A word used to show the relation of one thing to another is called a Preposition.

They govern and usually precede Nouns and Pronouns.

They are often very short words as in, at, on, to, under etc.

  1. The cat sat on the mat.
  2. The cow sat under a tree.
  3. We are going to Delhi.
  4. Let us for a walk.

 

Conjunction

A Conjunction is a Joining Word.

A Conjunction is a word that joins words or sentences together.

  1. Jill and Jane are sisters.
  2. He ran fast but he missed the bus.
  3. I cannot drink this because it is very hot.
  4. He worked hard; still he failed. 

 

Interjection

Interjections are kinds of ‘exclamations’.

An Interjection is a word that expresses some sudden feeling.

  1. Oh!  What a pretty picture.
  2. Hurrah! We have won the game.
  3. Hush! The baby is sleeping.
  4. Alas! He is dead.
