Parts of Speech
When we speak or write we use different kinds of words – Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions and Interjections. These are called Parts of Speech. Let us learn more about them:
Noun
A Noun is a naming word.
A Noun is the name of a person, place, animal or thing (everything that we can see, hear, touch, taste, smell, sense).
All names are Nouns.
Examples:
- Bill is a farmer.
- The cow gives us milk.
- Bombay is a big city.
- The stars twinkle at night.
Pronoun
A Pronoun is a word that is used in place of a Noun (I, we, You, he, she, it, they are pronouns).
- Mary is absent as she is not well.
- John is very rich. He is a businessman.
- Here are your books; Please put them on the table.
- You are wet. Go and change your clothes.
Verb
A Verb is a saying word.
A Verb says something about a person or thing (anything).
A Verb tells us about the action of a person or thing.
Remember, a verb is the most important word in a sentence. We
cannot make a sentence without a verb.
- I drink milk everyday.
- Birds fly in the sky.
- He works in a bank.
- A barber cuts hair.
Adjective
An Adjective is a describing word.
An Adjective is a word that is used to add something to the meaning of a Noun/Pronoun.
- The rose is a beautiful flower.
- Jane is a kind girl.
- They have a red car.
- Harry has five caps.
Adverb
A word which adds something to the meaning of a verb is called an Adverb.
An Adverb is a word which modifies a Verb, an Adjective or another Adverb.
It tells us How a thing is done, Where it is done or When it is done.
- The soldiers fought bravely.
- The students have gone upstairs.
- I wrote a letter yesterday.
- The old man walked slowly.
Preposition
A word used to show the relation of one thing to another is called a Preposition.
They govern and usually precede Nouns and Pronouns.
They are often very short words as in, at, on, to, under etc.
- The cat sat on the mat.
- The cow sat under a tree.
- We are going to Delhi.
- Let us for a walk.
Conjunction
A Conjunction is a Joining Word.
A Conjunction is a word that joins words or sentences together.
- Jill and Jane are sisters.
- He ran fast but he missed the bus.
- I cannot drink this because it is very hot.
- He worked hard; still he failed.
Interjection
Interjections are kinds of ‘exclamations’.
An Interjection is a word that expresses some sudden feeling.
- Oh! What a pretty picture.
- Hurrah! We have won the game.
- Hush! The baby is sleeping.
- Alas! He is dead.
