Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

  • Look at the following sentences and notice time change and verb change:

 

  1. I wake up at 7o’clock everyday.
  2. I woke up at 6 o’clock yesterday.
  3. Tomorrow, I will wake up at 7 o’clock again.

 

  1. We go to Delhi every month.
  2. We went to Delhi last month.
  3. We will go to Delhi next month.

 

The first sentence in both the groups expresses habitual activity.

The second sentence in both the groups expresses past activity.

The third sentence in both the groups expresses future activity.

The words wake, woke, go and went are Verbs.

Wake and go denote action which is done in the present time.

Woke and went denote action which was done in the past time.

When we add will/shall to wake and go, we express action which will be done in the future time.

  • Verbs are, along with Nouns, the most important words in a sentence. They express actions. When the time of an action changes, the Verb also changes.

 

  • Let us look at some more examples:

 

Present (Today) Past (Yesterday) Future (Tomorrow)
We work We worked We shall work
You sleep You slept You will sleep
They run They ran They will run
I eat I ate I will eat
We speak We spoke We shall speak

 

  • Some Verbs have the same form in both Present and Past; as,
We read We read We shall read
It costs It cost It will cost
I bet I bet I will bet
The Sun sets The Sun set The Sun will set

Nouns – Common and Proper

  • Look at the following sentences:

 

  1. Jack is boy.
  2. Tom is a boy.
  3. John is a boy.
  4. Dick is a boy.

 

  • The word boy occurs in all the four sentences. It is a common name used for all the boys. But all boys have special names too. Jack, Tom, John and Dick are special names of these four boys.
  • Pets and places also have special names. Cat and dog are common names used for all cats and dogs. But we often give special names to our pets:

       1.   My cat’s name is Silky. 

      2.   I call my dog, Naughty.

  • Jackie, Jimmy, Buddy, Molly, Rover, Rustam, Rosebud, Tiger, Pussy, Snowy, Snowball, Rocky, Jumbo, Appu, are some special names of our pets.
  • Places also have both common and special names. The words village, city, town, country, school, college, hospital, park, street are common names. But India, Australia, Delhi, Aton School, Sony Hospital, White Park are special names of places.
  • Similarly books, newspapers, magazines, days, months, festivals, institutions, companies, products etc. also have special names .The Bible, The Gita, Great Expectations, Harry Potter, The Times, Femina, Sunday, January, Christmas, Diwali, are all special names.
  • These special names are called Proper Nouns and common names are called Common Nouns.
  • Special names or Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter.
  • Some examples:
  1. Susan is a good girl.      
  2.  Peter is a smart boy.
  3. Bombay is a big city.
  4. Jackie is my dog.     
  5. Ganga is a holy river
  6. Femina is a woman’s magazine.

 

Susan, Peter, Bombay, Jackie, Ganga and Femina are Proper Nouns and girl, boy, city, dog, river, woman, magazine are Common Nouns.

 

  • A Proper Noun is the special name of a particular person, place or thing.
  • A Common Noun is a name given in common to all persons or things of the same class or kind.

Chetan Bhagat’s – One Night @ the Call Center

Bhagat’s One Night…is interesting, contemporary, easy to understand and extremely racy.  It does not tax your brains with heavy stuff. The story is both real and far-fetched. The call center part appears real but God’s intervention………… Well! I think we all need that to ‘right size’ our chaotic, messed up lives. God, are you listening?

The story is about six people working for a call center ‘Connexions’ in Gurgaon, near Delhi.Shyam, Varun, Priyanka, Radhika and Esha are all young and confused. Only the Military Uncle is fifty plus. They cater to foolish/childish queries of their American customers, most of them unwillingly, as it gives them bread and butter, cokes, pizzas and discos etc. The America bashing dialogues bring in the humour though.

The story revolves around the sufferings, family problems, ambitions, hopes and love life of the six characters. But after God’s call, they listen to their ‘inner call’ and act accordingly and fast. (The sudden personality changes look unreal). But perhaps that’s how God works.
